Cruising yacht qualification

RYA Day Skipper in Australia

Day Skipper is the point where the RYA cruising pathway changes from learning to crew into learning to take charge. It is widely recognised by yacht schools and charter operators, but the certificate is not a substitute for judgement, recent practice or a local boat licence where one applies.

01 — Course guide

Theory and practical are different courses

Day Skipper Theory is a shorebased course covering chartwork, position fixing, pilotage, tides, weather and collision regulations. The RYA lists about 40 hours plus assessment time, delivered in a classroom, online or by distance learning. It gives you the planning language needed on the practical course; it does not by itself show that you can handle a yacht.

Day Skipper Practical is normally five days aboard, sometimes delivered as three weekends or a three-day block plus two days. The RYA expects basic sailing ability, five days aboard, 100 nautical miles and four night hours before you start, together with theory knowledge at Day Skipper level. A good school will ask about that experience rather than treating payment as the only prerequisite.

02 — Course guide

What the certificate does—and does not—prove

The practical certificate records that you reached the course standard on the training yacht. It is useful evidence for charter companies and can support an application for an International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft where the RYA route applies. A charter operator can still ask for a sailing résumé, a checkout or evidence of experience on a similar boat.

In Australia, Day Skipper is a training certificate rather than a universal recreational boat licence. State and territory licensing rules still apply to powered recreational vessels, and commercial work sits under a different regulatory system. Check the rules for the water and vessel you will actually use.

03 — Course guide

Choose the boat and teaching format deliberately

Ask whether the course is tidal or non-tidal, monohull or catamaran, liveaboard or day-return, and how many students share the yacht. Those details shape the experience more than the logo on the certificate. If your goal is a Whitsundays catamaran charter, training only on a small monohull leaves a conversion step: twin-engine manoeuvring, windage, wide-beam berthing and catamaran reefing deserve specific practice.

Also ask how much time each student will spend as acting skipper. Five people can all complete a five-day course while receiving very different amounts of decision-making time. The strongest course lets you plan, brief, navigate, berth and debrief—not merely take a turn on the helm.

RYA Day Skipper booking questions

Confirm the boat, group size, practical hours, inclusions, assessment and weather policy before booking.

  • Is this practical course tidal or non-tidal, and does that match where I plan to sail?
  • How many students and instructors will be aboard?
  • How much time will I act as skipper and handle departures and berthing?
  • Are accommodation, food, wet-weather gear, fuel and certificate fees included?
  • What happens if weather prevents the planned passage or night exercise?
  • Will the certificate and logbook entries be issued promptly after completion?

Learn → practise → review your next step

  1. Ask the instructor what you can do reliably and what still needs support.
  2. Arrange opportunities to repeat those skills on an appropriate boat.
  3. Use the next course’s official entry requirements to decide when to progress.

This is a planning sequence, not an automatic entitlement to the next certificate.

Quick answers

RYA Day Skipper FAQ

Can a complete beginner take RYA Day Skipper?

The theory course is open to beginners, although practical experience helps. The practical course assumes basic sailing ability plus five days aboard, 100 nautical miles and four night hours. Competent Crew or equivalent experience is the normal preparation.

Is RYA Day Skipper a boat licence in Australia?

No. It is a training certificate. State or territory licensing rules may still apply to the vessel, and commercial operation is regulated separately.

Does Day Skipper guarantee a bareboat charter?

No. It is useful evidence, but charter companies set their own requirements and may ask about recent experience, boat size, local conditions or require a checkout.

Do I need Day Skipper Theory before the practical course?

The RYA recommends theory knowledge to Day Skipper shorebased standard before practical training. Some schools bundle the courses, but the practical instructor still expects you to arrive able to use charts, tides, weather information and collision regulations.

Can I take Day Skipper Theory online?

Yes. The RYA lists classroom, online and distance-learning formats. Check what tutor support, training charts, plotter tools, assessment and certificate delivery are included.

Is the Day Skipper practical course an exam?

It is normally taught and assessed continuously by the instructor rather than run as a separate final examination. You must demonstrate the required practical and skippering standard during the course.

Should I take Day Skipper on a monohull or catamaran?

Train on the type you expect to use where possible. A monohull course builds core cruising skills, but a catamaran owner or charterer should also practise twin-engine manoeuvring, windage, wide-beam berthing and cat-specific reefing.

What should a Day Skipper course price include?

Ask about accommodation aboard, meals, marina fees, fuel, wet-weather gear, course materials and certificate fees. Compare total cost and acting-skipper time, not only the headline fee.
