01 — Course guide

Start Yachting or Competent Crew: which first course fits?

Choose the shorter introduction when you still need to test the experience. A weekend can reveal whether you enjoy steering, working with a crew and spending time in a yacht's relatively confined space. It also gives you a chance to see how a school teaches before committing a larger part of your holiday or training budget.

If you already know you want a cruising-yacht pathway and can take a longer block of time, compare Competent Crew directly. Ask the school to quote both the complete beginner course and a staged route. The RYA describes possible reduced Competent Crew training after Start Yachting, but the school should confirm your practical route and the time still required before you book either course.

02 — Course guide

What to ask about the two-day course format

Find out where you join the yacht, whether the price includes nights aboard, when you finish and what happens between sailing sessions. A marina berth and a shared cabin create a different weekend from accommodation ashore. Tell the provider if you are travelling with a partner, need a particular sleeping arrangement or have questions about boarding the boat.

Ask how the instructor rotates roles. Being on the boat for two days is different from getting repeated opportunities to steer, manage a line and participate in manoeuvres. A useful answer describes what each student does. It should also explain how the school adjusts the route and activities when weather affects the original plan.

03 — Course guide

Compare the complete Start Yachting price

Request a written total covering instruction, accommodation where offered, meals, clothing loans, course materials and certificate charges. Add your own transport and any overnight stay before joining. Compare like-for-like quotes: an apparently cheaper course may exclude the items that make the weekend workable for a visiting student.

Treat this as a trial of the learning relationship as well as the activity. Ask who will instruct, which yacht you will use and how many students will attend. Read the rescheduling terms before arranging non-refundable travel. The directory below identifies published training records; only the provider can confirm its current course dates and places.

04 — Course guide

How to turn the weekend into regular sailing

Before leaving, ask the instructor what to practise next and record the boat, conditions and tasks you completed. A few specific observations are more useful than a general impression that the weekend went well. Write down unfamiliar terms while you remember the situations in which they were used.

Choose your next step while access is still easy. That might be Competent Crew, another supervised day, or an introduction to a local crewing community. If the long-term goal is small-keelboat club sailing, compare Australian Sailing Start Crewing too; the most useful pathway is one you can continue near home.

Learn → practise → review your next step

  1. Ask the instructor what you can do reliably and what still needs support.
  2. Arrange opportunities to repeat those skills on an appropriate boat.
  3. Use the next course’s official entry requirements to decide when to progress.

This is a planning sequence, not an automatic entitlement to the next certificate.

Quick answers

RYA Start Yachting FAQ

Can I take Start Yachting with no sailing experience?

Yes. The RYA describes it as a beginner introduction. Discuss personal access needs and the school's age arrangements before booking.

Does Start Yachting let me charter a yacht alone?

It is introductory training, not evidence of independent skippering competence. Ask the intended charter operator what experience and certification it requires.

Should I take Start Yachting before Competent Crew?

It is useful if you want to try cruising first. Beginners can also consider Competent Crew directly. Compare the total cost and time of both routes with the school.
