Offshore safety training

Safety and Sea Survival Course Australia

Safety and Sea Survival training prepares offshore skippers and crew to prevent emergencies, use survival equipment and respond when prevention fails. The wet drill matters: reading about a liferaft is not the same as boarding one in foul-weather gear.

01 — Course guide

What the full course includes

Australian Sailing lists a recommended 16-hour course using presentations, learning activities and practical work with liferafts, inflatable lifejackets and distress flares. It is commonly delivered over two full days, although some providers separate online theory from a scheduled pool and flare session.

The official maximum teaching ratio is 20 students to one instructor in the classroom and 10 to one for pool sessions. Practical water exercises are normally held in a heated pool or another clean, enclosed venue with managed risks and suitable water temperature. Confirm that the product you are buying is the full course, not only a refresher or wet-drill component.

02 — Course guide

Certificate validity and offshore racing

The Australian Sailing course page states that the certificate is valid for five years and is required for Category 1 and Category 2 races. Race organisers and the applicable special regulations determine exactly who aboard must hold current training, so check the notice of race and crew requirements rather than assuming one certificate covers the boat.

A current certificate is a baseline, not a complete safety system. Crew should still practise with the actual boat’s lifejackets, harness points, radios, fire equipment, emergency steering and abandon-ship plan before departure.

03 — Course guide

Choose the practical component carefully

Ask where the pool drill occurs, what clothing you must bring and whether the course includes live or approved flare training. If theory is online, confirm completion deadlines and whether the practical date is included in the advertised fee. A cheap theory-only product is poor value if you later discover that the wet drill is separate or unavailable before your race.

For cruising rather than racing, the course is still valuable. Focus your questions on liferaft boarding, cold shock, person-overboard prevention, communications and the equipment actually carried on your planned passage.

  1. Ask the instructor what you can do reliably and what still needs support.
  2. Arrange opportunities to repeat those skills on an appropriate boat.
  3. Use the next course’s official entry requirements to decide when to progress.

This is a planning sequence, not an automatic entitlement to the next certificate.

Quick answers

Safety & Sea Survival FAQ

How long is a Safety and Sea Survival course?

Australian Sailing recommends 16 hours. Traditional courses run over two days; blended formats may put theory online and schedule pool and flare drills separately.

How long is the certificate valid?

Australian Sailing states that the qualification certificate is valid for five years from the course date. Check refresher and practical requirements before it expires.

Do I need the course for offshore racing?

Australian Sailing says it is required for Category 1 and Category 2 races. The race documents determine how many crew need current certificates and any additional requirements.

Can the theory be completed online?

Some approved providers use e-learning for theory, followed by scheduled practical drills. Confirm that the advertised product includes every component required for the full certificate.

What happens in the wet drill?

Participants commonly practise in sailing clothing and lifejackets, use survival techniques and work with a liferaft under instructor supervision. The exact exercise and venue are controlled by the approved centre.

Is a refresher the same as the full course?

No. Refresher and practical-only products are intended for specific renewal or completion situations. Tell the provider what certificate you hold and its dates so it can identify the correct route.

Do cruisers benefit if they do not race?

Yes. Liferafts, lifejackets, cold-water survival, distress signals, heavy weather and emergency organisation are relevant offshore cruising skills even when no race rule requires the certificate.

Does the certificate replace onboard drills?

No. Every crew should still practise with the actual vessel’s lifejackets, harness points, radios, fire equipment, emergency steering and abandon-ship plan.
