Radio operator qualifications

Marine Radio Courses and Certificates Australia

The right marine radio qualification depends on the equipment and operating area, not on the name a training provider happens to advertise. In Australia, operators of marine radios other than 27 MHz generally need an appropriate qualification.

Open ACMA marine radio qualifications

01 — Course guide

AWQ, SROCP and LROCP are not the same

ACMA describes the Australian Waters Qualification (AWQ) as suitable for casual boaters operating VHF in Australian waters within 12 nautical miles of the coast. The Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) is an internationally recognised VHF qualification. The Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) covers HF as well as VHF and is the usual choice for yachts carrying long-range radio.

If the vessel has satellite equipment used as part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, ACMA lists the Marine Satellite Communications Endorsement in combination with an SROCP or LROCP. Certain stations and surveyed-vessel roles require a GMDSS certificate. Choose from the equipment and voyage, then verify the current requirement with ACMA or AMSA.

02 — Course guide

Who issues and assesses the qualifications

The AWQ corresponds to the nationally recognised unit MARC059 and is available through registered training organisations authorised to assess it. The Australian Maritime College manages SROCP, LROCP and MSCE examinations in Australia. AMSA manages GMDSS certificate requirements for relevant seafarers and vessels.

ACMA lists no minimum age for AWQ, a minimum age of 16 for SROCP, LROCP and MSCE, and 18 for a GMDSS certificate. Aviation qualifications are not accepted as marine-radio equivalents. Overseas marine qualifications may be recognised when they meet the applicable international rules.

03 — Course guide

Course marketing can hide the actual certificate

A provider may advertise a ‘VHF course’, ‘marine radio licence’ or ‘radio day’. Before paying, ask for the exact certificate name, who conducts the exam, whether exam and issue fees are included, and whether the course covers DSC equipment. A completion email from a school is not necessarily the operator qualification you need.

The certificate belongs to the operator; radio equipment and stations may also sit under separate licensing arrangements. For a vessel purchase, offshore race or commercial job, check both the operator qualification and the equipment or station requirements.

Marine radio certificates booking questions

Confirm the boat, group size, practical hours, inclusions, assessment and weather policy before booking.

  • What exact qualification will I receive: AWQ, SROCP, LROCP, MSCE or GMDSS?
  • Does it cover the VHF, HF and satellite equipment I will operate?
  • Are the exam, assessment and certificate issue fees included?
  • Is the assessor authorised for this qualification?
  • Does the course teach Digital Selective Calling and practical distress procedure?
  • How long after passing will the certificate be issued?

Learn → practise → review your next step

  1. Ask the instructor what you can do reliably and what still needs support.
  2. Arrange opportunities to repeat those skills on an appropriate boat.
  3. Use the next course’s official entry requirements to decide when to progress.

This is a planning sequence, not an automatic entitlement to the next certificate.

Quick answers

Marine radio certificates FAQ

Do I need a qualification to use a VHF marine radio in Australia?

ACMA says operators of marine radios other than 27 MHz need an appropriate qualification. For VHF, the accepted route depends on where and how you operate; AWQ, SROCP and LROCP are common options.

What is the difference between SROCP and LROCP?

SROCP is an internationally recognised VHF qualification. LROCP covers both HF and VHF and is used when operating long-range HF marine radio.

Is there a minimum age?

ACMA lists no minimum age for AWQ; 16 for SROCP, LROCP and MSCE; and 18 for a GMDSS certificate.

Is AWQ the same as SROCP?

No. AWQ is an Australian VHF qualification intended for operation in Australian waters within 12 nautical miles of the coast. SROCP is an internationally recognised VHF operator certificate.

Do I need LROCP for HF radio?

ACMA identifies LROCP as the certificate covering HF and VHF marine radio. Confirm the current requirement for your vessel, operating area and role before enrolling.

Do I need a certificate for 27 MHz marine radio?

ACMA states that operators do not need a qualification for 27 MHz equipment. Different equipment and station-licensing conditions can still apply.

Does a marine radio certificate expire?

Certificate validity and replacement arrangements depend on the qualification. Ask the Australian Maritime College, ACMA, AMSA or the issuing body about the specific certificate you hold.

Is an aviation or amateur radio qualification enough?

Do not assume so. ACMA specifically says aviation radio qualifications are not recognised as equivalent marine qualifications. Check any other claimed equivalence with the responsible authority.
