01 — Course guide

What the official course promises

Australian Sailing lists Start Crewing as a recommended 12-hour course for people aged 16 and over who are water confident. The course introduces boat handling, safety and sailing theory on a keelboat, with equipment provided by the accredited Discover Sailing Centre. Successful participants receive a Start Crewing completion certificate.

Twelve hours is a recommendation rather than a guarantee that every centre uses the same timetable. Some clubs spread sessions across several mornings; others use a weekend block or combine Start Crewing with Start Helming. Ask for the actual on-water hours, maximum group size and what happens when wind is too light or too strong.

02 — Course guide

Why the club connection matters

The certificate is useful, but the main advantage of this route is access. A course at a functioning yacht club can lead directly to social sailing, twilight racing, volunteer race crews and boat owners looking for reliable people. That regular repetition is what turns course knowledge into automatic boat handling.

Before booking, ask what graduates can do the following week. A slightly more expensive course with an organised crewing board, supervised practice or trial membership may deliver far more value than a cheaper course that ends at the certificate presentation.

When to choose another beginner course

Choose RYA Competent Crew instead if your goal is cruising-yacht life, a five-day immersive course or the RYA Day Skipper ladder. Choose a dinghy course if you want the fastest feedback on balance, sail trim and steering, or if local club sailing is mostly off-the-beach boats.

Start Crewing is not a boat licence and does not certify you to skipper independently. The next Australian Sailing steps are Start Helming and Start Skippering, supported by real time crewing between courses.

Start Crewing booking questions

Confirm the boat, group size, practical hours, inclusions, assessment and weather policy before booking.

  • How many of the advertised hours are normally spent on the water?
  • Is Start Helming included or sold as a separate course?
  • What boat type will we use and how many students share it?
  • Are membership, certificate and equipment costs included?
  • What continuing crewing or practice opportunities are available?
  • How are sessions rescheduled for unsuitable weather?

Learn → practise → review your next step

  1. Ask the instructor what you can do reliably and what still needs support.
  2. Arrange opportunities to repeat those skills on an appropriate boat.
  3. Use the next course’s official entry requirements to decide when to progress.

This is a planning sequence, not an automatic entitlement to the next certificate.

Quick answers

Start Crewing FAQ

How long is Start Crewing?

Australian Sailing recommends 12 hours. Centres may deliver that across a weekend or several shorter sessions, and some combine it with Start Helming.

Do I need experience?

No prior sailing experience is required, but Australian Sailing says participants should be water confident. Tell the centre about any accessibility or swimming concerns.

Can I skipper after Start Crewing?

No. It is a crew-level introduction. Build experience, complete helming training and progress to Start Skippering before expecting to take charge unsupervised.

Is Start Crewing only for yacht-club members?

Not necessarily. Accredited centres set their own enrolment arrangements. Ask whether the fee includes temporary or ongoing membership and whether non-members can join continuing sailing activities.

Is equipment included?

Australian Sailing says equipment and gear are provided by the accredited centre, but confirm clothing, footwear and personal items with the provider before the first session.

Is Start Helming included with Start Crewing?

Some centres sell a combined Start Crewing and Start Helming course, while others run them separately. The combined official pathway has a longer recommended duration, so check the exact certificate and hours advertised.

Does Start Crewing qualify me for yacht racing?

It gives you a useful beginner foundation, but a skipper or club decides whether you are ready for a particular boat and race. Regular supervised crewing and a clear safety briefing should follow the course.

How is Start Crewing assessed?

It is a practical completion course delivered through an accredited centre. Ask how the centre records skills, handles missed sessions and decides when a participant has met the course outcome.
