01 — Course guide

Prerequisites are skills, not merely certificates

Australian Sailing says students should be water confident and bring the skills, knowledge and experience gained from Start Crewing and Start Helming. A centre may accept equivalent experience, but it should still check that you can steer, trim, tack, gybe, recover a person overboard and work safely around the boat before placing you in a skipper role.

Do not rush straight from one certificate to the next if every manoeuvre still needs prompting. A few club sessions between courses make Start Skippering more useful because you can focus on decisions, crew communication and anticipation rather than remembering which line to pull.

02 — Course guide

Sheltered water is an important limit

The official outcome is the ability to skipper unsupervised in sheltered waters. That does not automatically extend to exposed coast, night passages, unfamiliar bars, strong tidal streams or a large cruising yacht. The safe operating envelope remains a combination of your experience, the boat, weather, local rules and the club or owner’s requirements.

Ask the instructor to define the sheltered-water area used by the centre and the wind limits applied to students. A clear answer helps you understand what the course can genuinely prepare you to do after graduation.

How it differs from RYA Day Skipper

Start Skippering is a shorter Australian club-keelboat course. RYA Day Skipper combines a substantial navigation-theory standard with a five-day cruising-yacht practical and is aimed at day passages in familiar waters. They overlap in leadership and boat handling but are not interchangeable syllabuses.

If you intend to race or day-sail through a local club, Start Skippering can be the efficient route. If you intend to cruise, charter or progress toward Yachtmaster, use Day Skipper or another cruising pathway and build the required sea time.

Learn → practise → review your next step

  1. Ask the instructor what you can do reliably and what still needs support.
  2. Arrange opportunities to repeat those skills on an appropriate boat.
  3. Use the next course’s official entry requirements to decide when to progress.

This is a planning sequence, not an automatic entitlement to the next certificate.

Quick answers

Start Skippering FAQ

How long is Start Skippering?

Australian Sailing recommends 12 hours, although centres choose their delivery timetable and may split it across several sessions.

Can I take Start Skippering without Start Crewing and Start Helming?

Australian Sailing lists the skills, knowledge and experience from those courses as prerequisites. A centre may recognise equivalent experience after checking it.

Is Start Skippering equivalent to RYA Day Skipper?

No. Start Skippering targets small-keelboat command in sheltered waters. RYA Day Skipper includes a wider cruising-yacht and navigation syllabus with different prerequisites and duration.

Do I need Start Helming before Start Skippering?

Australian Sailing lists the skills, knowledge and experience from Start Crewing and Start Helming as preparation. A centre may recognise equivalent experience after assessing it.

Can I hire or borrow a boat after Start Skippering?

Not automatically. Clubs, owners and hire operators set their own access requirements, which may include membership, a local checkout, experience in the boat type and weather limits.

Does Start Skippering include navigation?

It develops practical command and safety in sheltered waters. It is not equivalent to the broader chartwork, pilotage, tidal and passage-planning syllabus associated with RYA Day Skipper.

Is Start Skippering useful for racing?

Yes as a boat-handling and command foundation, but racing adds rules, starts, tactics, spinnakers and crew coordination. Australian Sailing offers separate racing progression.

What should I practise after the course?

Repeat departures, returns, reefing, person-overboard recovery, communication and decisions in gradually varied conditions while staying inside the boat’s, club’s and your own limits.
