RYA Competent Crew in Australia

Competent Crew is the RYA’s hands-on entry point for people who want to become useful, safe members of a cruising-yacht crew. It is broader than a short sailing experience and deliberately stops short of teaching you to command the boat.

01 — Course guide

A five-day practical course, not a classroom credential

The RYA describes Competent Crew as a five-day on-water course with no required experience. Schools often run it as five consecutive days, three weekends, or three days plus a weekend. If you have already completed Start Yachting, the RYA allows a shorter three- or four-day route.

Many Australian courses are liveaboard. That is not just accommodation: morning preparation, watchkeeping, meals, stowage and end-of-day checks are part of learning how a cruising yacht functions. Ask whether you genuinely sleep aboard, where the yacht sails, and whether marina nights or food cost extra.

02 — Course guide

The goal is useful crew, not passenger with a certificate

By the end, you should be able to follow a skipper’s brief, use the right line at the right time, steer a course, change and reef sails, understand basic emergency actions and move safely around the deck. Assessment is continuous: the instructor observes how reliably you perform the practical tasks rather than setting a single final exam.

A certificate cannot capture sea state, confidence or how recently you sailed. If the week was unusually calm, ask the instructor what you should practise next. The most valuable outcome is an honest list of skills to consolidate, plus a route into club crewing or further supervised passages.

03 — Course guide

Competent Crew versus Australian Sailing Start Crewing

Both welcome beginners, but they serve different contexts. Competent Crew is a five-day cruising-yacht course with an international RYA syllabus and is often liveaboard. Australian Sailing Start Crewing is a shorter introduction delivered through accredited Australian centres, commonly on small keelboats and closely connected to club sailing.

Choose by what you want to do next. For local twilight racing and a club community, Start Crewing is often the more direct and economical doorway. For cruising yachts, liveaboard experience and an eventual Day Skipper pathway, Competent Crew is usually the cleaner fit.

  1. Ask the instructor what you can do reliably and what still needs support.
  2. Arrange opportunities to repeat those skills on an appropriate boat.
  3. Use the next course’s official entry requirements to decide when to progress.

This is a planning sequence, not an automatic entitlement to the next certificate.

Quick answers

RYA Competent Crew FAQ

Do I need sailing experience for Competent Crew?

No. The RYA lists no required experience. You should still tell the school about swimming confidence, mobility, seasickness concerns and any time you have already spent aboard.

Is Competent Crew the same as Day Skipper?

No. Competent Crew develops reliable crew skills. Day Skipper adds navigation, passage planning, boat handling and responsibility for the yacht and crew.

Is Competent Crew usually liveaboard in Australia?

Many practical courses are, but formats vary. Confirm sleeping arrangements, food, marina nights and exactly how many days are spent aboard before booking.

Is there a written exam for Competent Crew?

No separate written final exam is normally required. The instructor assesses your practical ability and participation throughout the course.

Can I skip Competent Crew and go straight to Day Skipper?

Yes if you already have equivalent practical ability and meet the Day Skipper experience standard. Competent Crew is preparation, not a mandatory certificate prerequisite.

What should I pack for a liveaboard Competent Crew course?

Follow the school’s list. Soft luggage, layered clothing, non-marking footwear, sun protection and seasickness preparation are common. Confirm whether wet-weather gear, bedding and towels are supplied.

Will I get enough time at the helm?

That depends on student numbers, weather and course design. Ask the school how many students share the boat and how steering, sail handling, berthing and emergency drills are rotated.

What is the best next step after Competent Crew?

Sail regularly as crew, log your experience and build the five days, 100 nautical miles and four night hours expected for Day Skipper practical. Study Day Skipper Theory when you are ready to move toward command.
