Official duration
- RYA Competent Crew
- Five days; may be consecutive or divided across weekends
- Start Crewing
- Recommended 12 hours
Course vs course
Both are legitimate beginner sailing courses, but they solve different problems. Competent Crew immerses you in cruising-yacht life; Start Crewing is a shorter doorway into Australian keelboat and club sailing.
Course choice
A five-day practical course, often liveaboard, focused on becoming a safe and useful member of a cruising-yacht crew.

01 — What matters
Competent Crew makes most sense when you can continue on cruising yachts and want to progress through the RYA scheme. Start Crewing makes most sense when the teaching centre is also the club or community where you can sail regularly.
Ask both providers the same decisive question: what can a graduate do next week? A real crewing introduction, practice session or club placement often matters more than small differences in course price.
02 — What matters
A liveaboard-style week exposes students to preparation, stowage, watches, meals and the rhythm of a cruising yacht. It also requires more money and time away. Start Crewing is easier to fit around work and can be repeated through club sailing, but it cannot compress five days of boat life into a weekend.
Neither duration guarantees quality. Compare actual on-water hours, group size, weather policy and how often each person steers, handles sails and participates in emergency drills.
03 — What matters
RYA course names are commonly understood in international leisure-yachting and charter contexts. Australian Sailing connects directly to the national club and participation system. Neither beginner certificate licenses you to command a boat commercially or guarantees a berth, hire or charter.
If your plan is still uncertain, choose the provider offering the best continuing access. Skills built through twenty ordinary club sails will usually matter more than the logo on a beginner certificate.

Detailed FAQ
These answers explain the differences that course tables and provider advertisements often leave unclear.
Both accept beginners. Start Crewing is the smaller commitment; Competent Crew provides deeper cruising-yacht immersion. Choose according to the sailing you can continue afterward.
Start Crewing is usually cheaper because it is much shorter and commonly club based. Compare total inclusions: Competent Crew may include several days aboard, accommodation, meals or marina costs.
Start Crewing at an active racing club is normally the more direct route to local twilight or weekend crewing. Competent Crew is focused on cruising-yacht seamanship rather than racing.
Competent Crew fits the RYA cruising pathway but is not itself a skipper qualification. Build experience and progress toward Day Skipper, then check the charter company’s requirements.
Its practical experience can help, but the certificates are not automatically equivalent. An RYA centre considers your real sailing ability, logged days, miles, night hours and theory knowledge.
Yes if you already have equivalent skills and the next provider accepts your experience. Ask for an honest skills assessment instead of collecting a certificate you do not need.
No. Both are crew-level starting points. Start Skippering and RYA Day Skipper are later, different courses with additional skills and responsibilities.
Ask what organised sailing access exists after completion. Without practice, beginner skills fade quickly regardless of the syllabus.
