A logo on a website is a clue, not proof that every advertised course is currently authorised at that centre.

The quick answer
Check the awarding body’s current official centre or course finder, confirm the exact course and training location, and ask who issues the certificate. Separate membership, affiliation and instructor experience from formal centre recognition.

A useful question
Make the next conversation count
Step 1
Verify at the source
Use Australian Sailing, RYA or IYT official directories rather than relying only on provider badges. Match the legal or trading name, location and exact course.
Some instructors hold individual qualifications without the business being authorised to issue a particular certificate. Ask the distinction directly.
- Official centre listing
- Exact approved course
- Current training location
- Certificate issuer named
Step 2
Understand common claim confusion
Affiliated clubs, recognised training centres, commercial schools and independent instructors can all be legitimate but have different authority. Marketing may blur those categories.
A statement that a course is ‘based on’ an international syllabus does not mean the resulting certificate is issued by that body.
Step 3
Check the operating quality too
Accreditation sets a framework; it does not guarantee a particular instructor, boat condition or student experience. Ask about ratios, weather limits, complaints and ongoing access.
Conversely, valuable coaching may be unaccredited when no formal certificate is promised. Judge it against its actual claim.
Practical answers
How to Check Sailing School Accreditation FAQs
How do I verify an RYA school?
Use the RYA’s current official training-centre finder and confirm the course and location.
Can a yacht club issue certificates?
Yes when it is authorised for the relevant scheme and course. Verify the current listing.
Is accreditation the same as a government licence?
No. Training recognition and state vessel-operator licensing are separate systems.
Course, legal and medical details can change. Use the official source linked from our source pages before relying on a requirement.
