Stage 4

Advanced certificates

This is orientation, not a compulsory sequence or equivalence table. Entry to later courses depends on real experience, relevant theory and the current official syllabus.

How we research these guides →

Step 1

Place the certificate in the pathway

International Crew introduces active crewing on cruising yachts. Bareboat Skipper adds planning and command at an introductory skipper level. Higher certificates carry additional knowledge and experience expectations.

Ask the school to explain prerequisites in plain language and assess your real experience. Similar-sounding awards from different systems are not automatically equivalent.

  • Current IYT partner-school status
  • Exact certificate issued
  • Theory and practical components
  • Experience requirement
  • Intended charter acceptance

Step 2

Judge the practical course

Compare active helming, berthing, sail handling, anchoring and decision time rather than counting only course days. A smaller group can matter when command practice is the goal.

Confirm whether training is on a monohull or catamaran and whether the operating area resembles where you intend to sail. Treat platform conversion and unfamiliar local conditions as separate skills.

Step 3

Verify what happens after certification

A certificate supports a sailing résumé; it does not replace one. Charter companies, insurers and overseas authorities apply their own rules and may request recent miles, a local permit or a practical checkout.

Keep course records and logbook entries, and arrange follow-up sailing soon after completion.

Practical answers

IYT Sailing Courses in Australia FAQs

Is IYT the same as RYA?

No. They are separate training organisations with different syllabuses and certificates, even where course names or outcomes appear similar.

Can I charter with an IYT certificate?

It may be accepted, but the operator and destination decide. Ask using the exact certificate name and disclose your experience.

How do I verify an IYT school?

Use IYT’s current official school or course finder and confirm the advertised course with the provider.

Course, legal and medical details can change. Use the official source linked from our source pages before relying on a requirement.
